Grandma's Mom

Grandma, what was your mom like? Can you tell a story that describes her personality or values?
My mother enjoyed singing and had a lovely voice - sang for the troops in SF during WW I. She so loved my Dad - Depression came in their early marriage - my Mom was very frugal she gave hot meals to men who came to our house and they ate at the back steps and pruned our shrubs - my mother would say they did not want a hood out and the few shrubs that we had were well groomed. It was said our house was "worked" as no other neighbor had hungry men come to their home. This house was about a half a mile from the railroad tracks. This area was known as 'Sullivan's Gulch' - now it is known as Banfield Freeway.

I can barely imagine what life was like during the depression - I've seen old black and white movies but to think Grandma was a little girl in our very own Portland at that time, with men coming to the back stairs for a warm meal - wow! And what did her mother's love for her father look like? What songs were song during those days?
